CONGRESSMAN ADAM GRAY OFFERS BUDGET AMENDMENT TO PROTECT MEDICAID

February 25, 2025

WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Adam Gray (D-Merced) today spoke in favor of his amendment to the proposed budget resolution that would protect Medicaid from devastating cuts. The amendment would have prevented consideration of any legislation that would result in cuts to Medicaid in order to provide tax breaks to individuals with a net worth of one billion dollars or more. Congressman Gray’s amendment to the budget resolution was offered to the Rules Committee, but was voted down.

While on the House Floor, Congressman Gray urged his colleagues on both sides of the aisle to support this commonsense amendment and protect health coverage for millions of Americans.

“I submitted an amendment to the budget to ask a simple question. Is it such a priority to fund tax cuts for individuals with over $1 billion in net worth that we would enact devastating cuts to health care for rural and low-income communities? This proposal would steal from the poor to give to the rich. But even if you don’t think that’s a problem, Madam Speaker, this literally makes health care coverage worse for every single person living in rural America.

“My amendment to the proposed budget would prevent consideration of any legislation that would result in cuts to Medicaid. This is my commonsense solution to honor the trust our constituents put in us when they sent us to Congress.”

According to the California Medical Association, over 450,000 individuals in California’s 13th congressional district rely on Medi-Cal, the state’s Medicaid program. Medicaid cuts would also impact the Central Valley’s provider shortage, endangering access to care for Valley families.
